Hello,
I was hoping to get some perspectives on my profile and choice of schools.
Age: 26 (Male)
Nationality: Indian
GMAT: 730 (Q 46, V 44, AWA 5.5)
Education:
1. Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering - Well-known and established university in India (ranked in top 5)
2. Master's in Industrial & Systems Engineering - Top 5 Engineering University in U.S. (GPA - 3.14)
Work Experience:
(total 2.5 years as of today with 1 year in US and 1.5 years in India)
2 years (1 US + 1 India) as Analyst in a mid-tier management consulting firm (ATK/Deloitte/PWC/Capgemini) mainly focused on outsourcing and supply chain management as functions across all industry sectors
(Current) 0.5 year as Consultant with a Top 3 strategy firm focused on non-profit/social sector engagements (mainly education)
Extracurricular/Leadership:
Minimal outside of work. At work, present role has potentially huge social/community impact.
Post-MBA aspirations:
In the context of social/ non-profit sector:
VC/ Strategy Consulting (short-term)
Entrepreneurial Venture (long-term)
Target Schools:
Dream: Harvard, Stanford
Sweet: Kellogg, MIT, Tuck, Yale, Haas
Safe: Duke, UCLA, Indian School of Business
Potential Weaknesses in profile:
1. Lack of exceptional academic performance (average GPA in grad school)
2. Lack of extracurricular/leadership activities
3. Perception as a lost individual without a focus area or strength (have done a variety of unrelated things over the last 3-4 years)
4. Unbalanced GMAT score with percentiles 97% and 76% in Verbal and Quant
Questions:
1. Choice of schools: What are my chances of getting into these schools especially H/S? Are my choices too ambitious? I wish to whit the above list to 7 schools. Also, can you recommend any other schools I may not have considered given my profile and aspirations?
2. Any tips on the profile and how I can improve my application by focusing or not focusing on specific aspects of my profile? (based on potential weaknesses listed above)

Thanks for your post.
First to you assessment of weaknesses:
1) I agree , but a 3.14 at the graduate level is usually a below average (not mediocre) GPA. Were there extenuating circumstances?
2) Agree.
3) Here I think you are being a little hard on yourself. A certain amount of experimentation is normal, and you did work consistently in consulting. You should be able to connect the dots.
4) It's close enough and you have a lot of quant background. I wouldn't worry about it and I certainly don't recommend that you retake the GMAT.
Now to your questions:
1) While Harvard and Stanford are not out of the question, I am not optimistic. I think you should skip applying to them and focus on others where your chances would be better. I am reluctant to call UCLAor Dukesafety programs, but agree that you are competitive there and at the other schools. Kelloggand MIT veer more towards the stretch category. Also consider Dardenand Ross.
2)It's hard to give specific advice based on a forum post, but I can suggest that you focus on your "huge" impact at work. Schools want to see impact, responsibility, leadership. Show it to them in your experience. I would also try to show your job changes as an upward trajectory and a path that has clarified your career goals and path.
