Hi,
I know this answer may seem simple to many, and apologies for the late notice (I am meeting with a senior person in my group tomorrow at 8:30 am!).
I am in finance and applying to business school in the fall. I am relocating soon - my last day in this office in the US is this week- and know I should probably start to ask for recommendations. I am meeting with a really senior person in my group tomorrow morning - as a sort of goodbye talk.
I am wondering if I should think about asking him for a recommendation, or whether it's appropriate to ask via email at one point since I'll be out of the country. I'm staying within the firm but in another locale. One thing I'm concerned about is that I am thinking of promotion prospects within the company - this would be one of my two choices - either business school or staying within the company. As such, I am hesitant to ask him for a recommendation.
My question boils down to whether it is better for my application to ask a really senior person like that to write my rec - but he hasn't worked directly with me, but he has heard good things from other people, and would likely ask me to write my rec and let him edit or something. Conversely, is it better to ask a junior person (i.e. a few levels above me but not an extremely senior person in the group)? Common sense would say the latter, but I've heard so many things otherwise from people - i.e. that your position matters. If he ends up asking me to basically write the recommendation for him to sign/edit, what's the harm?
I know this is a vague question but looking for any guidance/experience prior to my meeting tomorrow.
Any help appreciated.
