Question

Basic Information: 24 year old white male

Undergrad: 3.9 GPA. I graduated summa cum laude and won the management award for my class.

GMAT: 720 (45Q, 42V)

Work Experience: 2.5 years work in IT audit. I have experience in supervising other team members I should have good recommendations from my managers.

Other activities: 
- core team member of an international group for work (help welcome people who are internationally deployed)
- active member of local alumni group, member of the service committee (organize and participate in a monthly service project)
- active in recruiting campus hires (attended career fairs, gave presentations)
- In college, I volunteered for a free legal services organization. I also tutored other students for the college of business

Career ambitions:
I would like to change trajectory and enter the field of management consulting before ultimately starting my own technology company .

I am hoping to attend either Booth or Kellogg. I am open to other suggestions as well. What do you think of my chances?

I think you have enough of a shot at Booth and Kellogg that it's worth at least applying to both.

There are certainly people like yourself at both of these schools, and others like you who didn't get in for one reason or no reason at all (i.e. they just got lost in the mix).

So the key thing for you with your applications is making sure the adcom can distinguish you from so many other guys with similar caliber of resumes like yourself. In short, no one is going to question your raw ability, so it's going to be a bit of a personality contest.

I appreciate you taking the time to respond to me. Will visiting the schools in person and making it known I'd like to attend help? I've heard those 2 in particular like it when you visit campus.

Visiting the schools can help *you* get a real sense for the school culture, but from an adcom standpoint it's not really that important. In other words, if you're going to visit the school, do it because you really want to, and not for the sake of face time. Moreover, if you're applying R1, you won't have a chance to visit the school unless you want to go to an empty campus (and before you ask "should I apply R2 and visit the school?" Again, it's not about face time).

One last question - since you said there are a lot of people like me that get in, and a lot that don't, do you think I would be the type of candidate that is helped a lot by an admissions consultant? I'm thinking about doing it because I'm not really sure how to attack the essays.

That's kind of a loaded question - if I say yes, then it'll seem self-serving. If I say no, then I would be acting against my own interests. Whether it's worth it or not really is a personal decision only you can make.

What's important is getting constructive feedback from people who are in a position to do that - whether it's colleagues, friends, family, or consultants (or all of them). You will likely get conflicting opinions here and there about specifics, but like any subjective process that's to be expected.
