Owning a free-standing house and living in it, flaunting a top-line luxury brand sedan, possessing right-off-the-shelf everyday modern gadget, and boasting a high 5-digit figure wage - the concept of the American Dream has become synonymous to the individuals' pursuit of material opulence. However, when the term was coined by writer and historian James Truslow Adams in his best-seller in 1931 Epic of America, it exemplified "the social dream of justice and equality against individual dreams of aspiration and personal success."
The concept of American Dream has profound roots, its tenets present in the Declaration of Independence that talks about equal rights and opportunities for all. For the first two decades of the dream's inception, this concept primarily had a political connotation associated with equality of individuals and not an economic meaning. This association lured thousands of settlers to the United States. For example, in the 19th century, many well-learned Germans fled the 1848 revolution and embraced political freedom in the American region. They made that land their abode where lack of a hierarchical or aristocratic society did not determine the ceiling for individual aspirations.
In the first quarter of the 20th century, the American Dream mutated to resonate the demands of the African-American citizens for better treatment and equal opportunities. The community's participation in the Second World War accelerated the hope for the actualization of that dream. Then, by the 1950s and the advent of the cold war, the term became a triumphalist patriotic assertion, a term that defined the United States in the eyes of an outsider. In this modern digital age, unfortunately, the American Dream stands for all thing material and can be quantified.

In the first question, I chose ‘E’ because the tone of the passage was negative.
The first paragraph and particularly the second last line in the end has the word “unfortunately”.
While both ‘A’ & ‘B’ were also strong contenders.
Especially, ‘A’ as it is still bringing a negative tone by ‘lost essence’. However, ‘B’ is absolutely neutral and the correct answer.
Can someone please explain?
