The setup here is really clever - note that the sentence is essentially listing a bunch of things (nouns) that are depicted in the paintings:
The atrium houses paintings depicting folk cultures (noun), scenes (noun) of occupations, religious symbols (noun), etc.
Then you get to the end, and you have "women sewing and knitting" and then a choice between ", and dances" or "and dancing." Here it's really important to note: "women" is the noun that's parallel to cultures, scenes, symbols, etc. And then "sewing and knitting" are modifiers telling you about those women. If you wanted "dancing" to be another of those modifiers, then "women" would be the last noun in the list. So you'd need "and women sewing, knitting, and dancing." But since that's not an option, we have to treat "dances" as one last noun - note that in (D) there's a comma between "and knitting, and dances." That tells you that the second "and" links dances as the last part of the list of nouns.
