IMO D

Neither Pete Rose, the major league baseball hits leader, or Shoeless Joe Jackson, the only rookie to hit over .400, has been admitted to the Hall of Fame.

i) ''Neither'' at the beginning requires a ''nor''.

ii) Neither A nor B - the verb placed closer to B is plural if B is plural and is singular if B is singular

A) or Shoeless Joe Jackson, the only rookie to hit over .400, has been admitted to the Hall of Fame
''or'' is wrong, require a ''nor'' at the beginning of sentence

B) or Shoeless Joe Jackson, the only rookie to hit over .400, have been admitted to the Hall of Fame
''or'' is wrong, require a ''nor'' at the beginning of sentence

C) nor Shoeless Joe Jackson has been admitted to the Hall of Fame, the only rookie to hit over .400
''the only rookie....'' modifies hall of fame, it should modify jackson

D) nor Shoeless Joe Jackson, the only rookie to hit over .400, has been admitted to the Hall of Fame
correct

E) nor Shoeless Joe Jackson, the only rookie to hit over .400, have been admitted to the Hall of Fame
''Have'' is wrong, require a singular ''has'' to modify jackson

Project SC Butler: Day 99 Sentence Correction (SC2)

Neither Pete Rose, the major league baseball hits leader, or Shoeless Joe Jackson, the only rookie to hit over .400, has been admitted to the Hall of Fame.

A) or Shoeless Joe Jackson, the only rookie to hit over .400, has been admitted to the Hall of Fame
B) or Shoeless Joe Jackson, the only rookie to hit over .400, have been admitted to the Hall of Fame
C) nor Shoeless Joe Jackson has been admitted to the Hall of Fame, the only rookie to hit over .400
D) nor Shoeless Joe Jackson, the only rookie to hit over .400, has been admitted to the Hall of Fame
E) nor Shoeless Joe Jackson, the only rookie to hit over .400, have been admitted to the Hall of Fame

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Neither should never be with or, just as either should never be with [] nor

• To correct this sentence, use neither with nor, as in answer choice D

• Answer A incorrectly pairs neither with or
Eliminate answer A.

• Answer B also incorrectly pairs neither with or, and B creates a subject and verb agreement issue
with the use of have, as does option E.
Remember, the noun closest to the verb [HAS] determines plurality when two nouns are joined together by neither . . . nor.
Eliminate Answers B and E.

• Choice C moves the adjectivial clause (the only rookie to hit over .400), a clause [that should modify] Shoeless Joe Jackson
so that the clause now incorrectly modifies the Hall of Fame
Eliminate answer C.

• Option D is correct

ANALYSIS

• Split #1, Idiom: Neither . . . nor
Options A and B incorrectly use Neither . . . or

The correct idioms in the neither/nor and either/or conjunctions

Correct:
Neither X nor Y
Either X or Y

Always wrong:
Neither X or Y
Either X nor Y

Split #2: Verb tense

When neither and nor are used together, the noun closer to the verb determines whether the verb should be plural or singular

Correct: Neither the CEO nor her staff members are in the company's main office this week.
Correct: Neither the staff members nor the CEO is in the company's main office this week.

Neither Pete Rose . . . nor Shoeless Joe Jackson . . . HAS been admitted

Options E (and B) incorrectly use have rather than has
Eliminate option E

• Split #3: modifier error

We do not need to know anything about baseball in order to understand
that a Hall of Fame is not a person who can hit baseballs.

Alternatively, parallelism gives a clue about the modifier error.
All other options are constructed this way:

Neither Pete Rose, the ABC, nor Shoeless Joe Jackson, the XYZ, has been admitted . . .

Option C is constructed this way
Neither Pete Rose, the ABC, nor Shoeless Joe Jackson, has been admitted, the XYZ

Option C contains incorrect modifier usage. Eliminate C.

Answer E is correct.

COMMENTS

Both answers are excellent, each in its own way.

Ashokshiva and GKomoku , kudos! Nice work. :)

Source: PowerScore

Very mechanical. simple rule for nor, or, neither..nor..., either...or... is that the "verb must agree in number with the nearest subject".
Here the nearest subject is Shoeless Joe Jackson, therefore the verb must be has not have.

A) or Shoeless Joe Jackson, the only rookie to hit over .400, has been admitted to the Hall of Fame --> "neither ... nor ..." construction

B) or Shoeless Joe Jackson, the only rookie to hit over .400, have been admitted to the Hall of Fame --> same as A

C) nor Shoeless Joe Jackson has been admitted to the Hall of Fame, the only rookie to hit over .400 --> "the only rookie to hit over .400" should be near to "Shoeless Joe Jackson" to modify it properly

D) nor Shoeless Joe Jackson, the only rookie to hit over .400, has been admitted to the Hall of Fame --> correct

E) nor Shoeless Joe Jackson, the only rookie to hit over .400, have been admitted to the Hall of Fame --> "Shoeless Joe Jackson" is name of a person i.e. is singular
