The integration of Major League baseball was viewed to be a potential threat to revenue because Major League clubs rented their ballparks when they traveled to Negro League teams.

A) viewed to be a potential threat to revenue because Major League clubs rented their ballparks when they traveled to Negro League teams.
"Viewed as" is the correct idiom. So are the Major League clubs travelling to Negro League teams? No, they're renting the ballparks! Definitely a change in meaning.

B) viewed to be potentially threatening since Major League clubs rented their ballparks when they traveled to Negro League teams.
Same as A. Also worse because we lost the crux of the sentence about revenue.... :x

C) viewed as potentially threatening to revenue since Major League clubs rented their ballparks when they traveled to Negro League teams.

D) viewed as a potentially threatening situation to revenue, for many Major League clubs rented their ballparks to Negro League teams when they traveled.
So many issues here. "Potentially threatening situation to revenue" is extremely unnecessary (E says it better). "They" refers to Negro League teams.

E) viewed as a potential threat to revenue because many Major League clubs rented their ballparks to Negro League teams when they traveled.

I understand that option C is incorrect. However, I can't find good reasoning as to why "viewed as potentially threatening" is incorrect.

I think it's because "threatening" becomes a verb here but I'm not sure. Can someone shed a light into the grammar of option C and option D. Thanks !

Its my understanding that "potentially threatening" is incomplete. "Potentially" here is an adverb modifying the adjective "threatening", which in turn should modify a noun. Thats not the case in C and hence the usage is incorrect. For the same reason, B is also incorrect.

Honestly speaking, I couldn't find anything wrong in D. I selected E because it conveyed the same meaning and was more concise.

Took me 2:30 mins cos of confusion b/w D and E (purely a diction and style issue in the end).
