1) doer has imp role in determining modifiers
2)understand the role of 's = of ... eg john's father= father of john
3)AND = indicator of llism , also indicator of lists (related to doer / subject in same clause)

The opening modifier should modify the movie Die hard
A. Modifier error. Incorrect
B. By enclosing John McTiernan within commas, the sentence turns it into non essential modifier. This changes the intended meaning.
C. Modifier error
D. Correct. Notice how using the possessive form also removed the non sensical implication that the movie itself won the award. This is by far the best choice.
E. Repeats the error in B. Moreover it says Die Hard won the award. Does not make sense. Also it is better to keep "later" close to adopted.
D is correct
