Though questions such as this one should indicate that one is doing well in exam, such questions could hardly be construed as a GMAC question. I found some issues in all the choices, but feel that the best answer must be A. First of all, there is a clause post "to conclude" and hence there needs to be a "that". Even if we ignore the missing "that", there need to be a time indicator such as "had" or "had been" in the first part of the sentence. Since there are two events happening here i.e. "..led researchers" and "..there was habitual use of plants", we need to have a past perfect.
a) reasons mentioned herewith
b) "would analyze" gives the impression that the presence "led them" before they even analyzed the soil.
c) two past perfects. What is happening before and after can't be deduced
d) "particulary....." is misplaced
e) should be either "to conclude" or "concluded that"
Please do correct me if I go wrong anywhere.
