The X and Y have to be parallel. In given sentence, we could see the non-underlined portion not only followed by a clause so Y has to be a clause. So the choices C,D and E are wrong. C and D are also wrong parallelism distortion for planning/to plan. The choice B is wrong as it distorts the parallelism between guide and plan.

Could you comment whether the use of "as well as" is correct in the correct option A, given that we should use "as well as" for only two items in the list ?

What I mean to say that whether this sentence construct is correct :

Tom and Joy, as well as Jerry, went to the market.

Hello,  abhishekmayank . In both the original sentence and the one you have written above, I interpret  as well as  to indicate an aside to add information that was apparently left out from the original line of thought. Of course, you could say,  Tom, Joy, and Jerry went to the market , just as you could say,  they also want data in order to better guide product development, plan manufacturing schedules, and generate predictive models...  But if the first two parts were already named and a third was left out, to be appended to the existing expression, then  as well as  or  too  can serve in that capacity. It may not be the cleanest, most concise form of expression, but it is functional, and, most importantly, choice (A) is the best option of the five presented here, so we should pick it.

I have the same question. It is obvious that, in the choice A, the "to better guide" is simultaneously parallel with "guide" and "to generate". Does this function well?
