My answer is (E). It took me 43 seconds.

There is a positive correlation between X and Y. Eliminate option (A), (B), and (D).

Now, between (C) and (E), we do recognize that (C) is shorter, but its meaning is not clear. In addition, "the number of reported outbreaks of food-borne illness per capita" in (E) is perfectly parallel with "the number of farmers markets per capita". Eliminate (C) and choose (E).

Although many consumers frequent their local farmers markets because they believe that the foods sold there are safer than foods sold in traditional supermarkets, there is a positive correlation between the number of farmers markets per capita to the amount of per capita outbreaks of food-borne illness.

KEY is ___ BETWEEN the number ___ AND the number, We can Eliminate A, B, C & D

A) to the amount of per capita outbreaks of food-borne illness

B) with how many recorded outbreaks of food-borne illness per capital are reported

C) and per capita reports of the amount of food-borne illnesses

D) or the number of per capital recorded outbreaks of food-borne illness being reported

A) to the amount of per capita outbreaks of food-borne illness
'between ... and' is the correct pairing. Also, 'amount' is for non-countable nouns. Outbreaks are countable. Out.

B) with how many recorded outbreaks of food-borne illness per capital are reported
'between ... and' is the correct pairing.

C) and per capita reports of the amount of food-borne illnesses
'amount' is for non-countable nouns. illnesses are countable. Out.

D) or the number of per capital recorded outbreaks of food-borne illness being reported
'between ... and' is the correct pairing.

E) and the number of reported outbreaks of food-borne illness per capita
Correct pairing and correct use of number.

A) to the amount of per capita outbreaks of food-borne illness -> between x and y. We don't have "and". Another issue, "the number of farmers markets per capita" is not parallel to "the amount of per capita outbreaks..." Incorrect.

B) with how many recorded outbreaks of food-borne illness per capital are reported -> We don't have "and". Another issue, "the number of farmers markets per capita" is not parallel to "how many recorded outbreaks..." Incorrect.

C) and per capita reports of the amount of food-borne illnesses -> Now, we have "and", which is better. But, "the number of farmers markets per capita" is not parallel to "per capita reports....." Incorrect.

D) or the number of per capital recorded outbreaks of food-borne illness being reported -> We don't have "and". Incorrect.

E) and the number of reported outbreaks of food-borne illness per capita -> It is better. Let's keep it.

So, I think E. :)

When we start reading the non-underlined part, Although should trigger that some contrast is definitely on the way .
And then there comes between construction and we cannot afford to miss Between X and Y construction that is pretty much basic.
So, let's start having a look, what the question is trying to do.

Quote:

Although many consumers frequent their local farmers markets because they believe that the foods sold there are safer than foods sold in traditional supermarkets, there is a positive correlation between the number of farmers markets per capita to the amount of per capita outbreaks of food-borne illness.
Quote:

A) to the amount of per capita outbreaks of food-borne illness
--- Between requires and to be followed along. Here Between .. to is wrong.

Quote:

B) with how many recorded outbreaks of food-borne illness per capital are reported
--- When we are using between, we have to make the constructions parallel, let's say,( between X and Y) X and Y both should be dependent or independent or question or affirmative or whatever be the name, they should be identical in every sense. Here, the correct construction gives us enough reason to eliminate the option.

Quote:

C) and per capita reports of the amount of food-borne illnesses
--- Here, construction of between ... and seems right but on closer look, we can see, the number of something is compared with per capita reports of something. Ooooh ! We don't do that here. means as Parallel - Identical. No means No. GMAT does not negotiate on this.

Quote:

D) or the number of per capital recorded outbreaks of food-borne illness being reported
--- Here, although the number is compared with a number, but again a silly between...or construction obstructs the allowed between...and construction.

Quote:

E) and the number of reported outbreaks of food-borne illness per capita
--- Number is compared with a Number. Between...and is used right on.
It was a long walk but E would be definitely a right match !!

D) or the number of per capital recorded outbreaks of food-borne illness being reported

Idiom: Between X and Y
Eliminate A, B, and D.

C) and per capita reports of the amount of food-borne illnesses
illness is a countable noun. So, the use of amount is incorrect.

E) and the number of reported outbreaks of food-borne illness per capita
Correct

Choice E is the answer.

The catch is the usage of Between X and Y.
The answer must start with 'and' and after this 'and', Y should be parallel to X.

Quote:

A) to the amount of per capita outbreaks of food-borne illness
Between X and Y is NOT correct representation.

Quote:
B) with how many recorded outbreaks of food-borne illness per capital are reported
Between X and Y is NOT correct representation.

Quote:

C) and per capita reports of the amount of food-borne illnesses
and is used correctly but X and Y are not parallel.
X:-the number of farmers markets per capita
Y:-per capita reports of the amount of food-borne illnesses

Quote:
D) or the number of per capital recorded outbreaks of food-borne illness being reported
Between X and Y is NOT correct representation.

Quote:
E) and the number of reported outbreaks of food-borne illness per capita
and is used correctly.
X and Y also parallel.
X:-the number of farmers markets per capita
Y:-the number of reported outbreaks of food-borne illness per capita

A) to the amount of per capita outbreaks of food-borne illness

B) with how many recorded outbreaks of food-borne illness per capital are reported

C) and per capita reports of the amount of food-borne illnesses

D) or the number of per capital recorded outbreaks of food-borne illness being reported

E) and the number of reported outbreaks of food-borne illness per capita

IMO E

The correct idiom should be between x and y where x and y should be parallel so options A,B,D are out

Out of C and E

E follows parallelism - and the number. This is parallel to the number of farmers markets
