In response to constant criticism from a section of the media, which has called the company slow and its management inept, the C.E.O. has issued a press release stating that the company was growing equally fast as its rivals.

A) In response to constant criticism from a section of the media, which has called the company slow and its management inept, the C.E.O. has issued a press release stating that the company was growing equally fast as its rivals. Incorrect

....as....as..... - correct idioms

B) The constant criticism from a section of the media, which has called the company slow and its management inept, and has made the C.E.O. issue a press release that states that the company was growing as fast as its rivals. Incorrect

first part of the sentence is incomplete and changes intended meaning

C) The C.E.O. has issued a press release, in response to constant criticism from a section of the media calling the company slow and its management inept, stating that the company was growing equally fast as its rivals. Incorrect

it is not clear that stating....part is connected with first part or modifies previous clause

D) In response to constant criticism from a section of the media, which has called the company slow and its management inept, the C.E.O. has issued a press release stating that the company was growing as fast as its rivals. Correct

E) In response to constant criticism from a section of the media, the C.E.O. has issued a press release by stating that the company, called slow and its management inept, was growing as fast as its rivals. Incorrect

awkward construction

My answer is (D). It took me 01:15.

(A) "equally fast as its rivals" is unidiomatic. "as...as" is expected.
(Granted, a poorly written PR piece penned by inept company executives may indeed contain such verbiage, but that would render the question too tricky.)

Armed with the insight from (A), I can eliminate (C) right away.

(B) Not a sentence because of "and" in "and has made".

(D) clearly states that it is the media that has called the company slow.

(E) The placement of "called slow and its management inept" is not ideal. On top of that, the phrase is grammatically wrong. "Called slow" is fine; even "called slow and inept" is grammatical. But "called slow and its management inept" cannot be analyzed.

IMO D - took me approx 1min 20 secs..

A) In response to constant criticism from a section of the media, which has called the company slow and its management inept, the C.E.O. has issued a press release stating that the company was growing equally fast as its rivals. - Equally fast as its rivals is unidiomatic and we need the structure as fast as.

B) The constant criticism from a section of the media, which has called the company slow and its management inept, and has made the C.E.O. issue a press release that states that the company was growing as fast as its rivals. - Two issues in this sentence -
i. Meaning Error - Which after the comma refers back to media now if we read this sentence after the comma it states that the media has called the company slow and its management inept - however the next part of the sentence states that MEDIA has made the CEO issue a press release which is incorrect. As the CEO has done it in his own wisdom .
ii. Also i had read it on one of the forums that GMAT considers it awkward to use string of relative clauses eg. "______that suggests that the ______"

- Due to the above two errors i had eliminated B.

C) The C.E.O. has issued a press release, in response to constant criticism from a section of the media calling the company slow and its management inept, stating that the company was growing equally fast as its rivals. -
Again a couple of errors here as well -
1. The easier one to spot is Equally fast as its rival which we had even spotted in option A. We prefer as fast as.
2. Stating is a Gerund and it will refer back to the entire clause before the comma. Which makes no sense as the CEO had done press release and not the Section of Media.

D) In response to constant criticism from a section of the media, which has called the company slow and its management inept, the C.E.O. has issued a press release stating that the company was growing as fast as its rivals. - OK

E) In response to constant criticism from a section of the media, the C.E.O. has issued a press release by stating that the company, called slow and its management inept, was growing as fast as its rivals - The meaning is incorrect due to the portion marked in bold.

Sentence Structure
---In response to constant criticism from a section of the media
----------------------------------------------------------------, which has called the company slow and its management inept,
the C.E.O.
has issued a press release
----------------------stating that the company was growing
---------------------------------------------------- equally fast as its rivals.

Error:
1. Idiom Error - equally fast as - Correct idiom: As X as Y (here X and Y doe need to be parallel)
2. Rest of the sentence seems fine

A) In response to constant criticism from a section of the media, which has called the company slow and its management inept, the C.E.O. has issued a press release stating that the company was growing equally fast as its rivals.
- error as highlighted

B) The constant criticism from a section of the media, which has called the company slow and its management inept, and has made the C.E.O. issue a press release that states that the company was growing as fast as its rivals.
- it is fragment
- Missing verb in the first part

C) The C.E.O. has issued a press release, in response to constant criticism from a section of the media calling the company slow and its management inept, stating that the company was growing equally fast as its rivals.
- Idiom Error

D) In response to constant criticism from a section of the media, which has called the company slow and its management inept, the C.E.O. has issued a press release stating that the company was growing as fast as its rivals.
- CORRECT

E) In response to constant criticism from a section of the media, the C.E.O. has issued a press release by stating that the company, called slow and its management inept, was growing as fast as its rivals.
- Issues with placement of modifier "called slow and its management inept"
- Conveying meaning - Company criticized itself

The answer is D

A introduces error using “as,” it shows role. “Equally fast as its rivals” creates illogical meaning! Eliminate

B Introducing “, and” prior has made CEO introduces IC, but the pronoun following lacks antecedent. As, the first clause is not completed, this is not a complete sentence! Eliminate

C Same error as described in A. Eliminate

D This sentence does not contain any flaws. Hence, Correct

E “ called slow ... inept” is an illogically modifying company! Eliminate
