To choose between B and D.
If the argument is carefully read again, we can know that the resoning - [highlight]"So, if I am not home tomorrow night, you will know that I haven't collected my final paycheck."[/highlight] is not connected with the attorney but with the statement itself.
For example:
Birds with feathers can fly. Ostrich is a bird, hence ostrich can fly. -- Even here the first statement only tells us that something can be true and not must be true.
Hence answer is option D.

I am going to WXY 's payroll office with an attorney, and I am not coming home without my final paycheck.
So it means he won't be coming home without the check. If he comes back it means that he has got the check.
Now
So, if I am not home tomorrow night, you will know that I haven't collected my final paycheck.
This doesn't mean that he must not have got the check. It can also happen that he has got the check but due to other circumstances he was not able to come back to home.
So clearly D
