Paint-O advertisement:
Our Eco-paint line of paint products has the fewest volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of all our paints. Consequently, our Eco-paint is one of the most ecologically responsible paint lines on the market today.
Which of the following, if true, most weakens the argument in above advertisement?
(A) The Environmental Protection Agency listed many other paints with more VOCs than Eco-paint.
(B) In recent months, Paint-O has sold more Eco-paint than it sold any of its other lines of paint.
(C) Paint products made by Paint-O generally have more VOCs than paint products made by other companies.
(D) White and red paints usually have more VOCs than other colors.
(E) Paint-O introduces a new line of paint products every six months.
I have a question about this CR below so do not scroll too far....
My question: I was stuck between A and C. I chose A for the reason that yes, they may have less VOCs but that doesn't mean they are the most ecologically responsible paint on the market. They could have VOCs that are more damaging than others in this paint, therefore I chose A because those other paints may include more VOCs but some may not be as dangerous as the ones in the Print-O product.
Anyway please help, I understand why C is right but I still see quite a bit of grey area with this one.

Premise : Paint-O's Eco Paint - Least VOC of all of PAINT O's products.
Conclusion : Eco Paint most ecologically responsible of ALL PAINTS (includng paints from OTHER companies)
The argument is flawed in that it uses a sample space to make a generalization. It is similar to saying something like : John is the highest paid employee in my company. Hence John is the highest paid employee in the world.
(A) The Environmental Protection Agency listed many other paints with more VOCs than Eco-paint. This does not do anything to the argument. In fact, it may even be slightly strengthening it by suggesting Eco-paint has a very low VOC even when compared to paints from other manufacturers.
(B) In recent months, Paint-O has sold more Eco-paint than it sold any of its other lines of paint. Clearly irrelevant.
(C) Paint products made by Paint-O generally have more VOCs than paint products made by other companies. Correctly attacks the generalization made. Illustrating through my analogy : John may be the highest paid employee in the company but my company is also one of the lowest paying in the world. Right answer.
(D) White and red paints usually have more VOCs than other colors. Clearly irrelevant.
(E) Paint-O introduces a new line of paint products every six months. Clearly irrelevant.

Hi,
As I understand, you are probably inferring that listing by Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) means that these different paint products are similar in their ecological damage. However, the option statement doesn't suggest this. It only says that both are listed by EPA. The option statement could have been written "There are many other paints with more VOCs than Eco-paint". In this case, it has to be treated as a fact. However, the given option says that EPA lists them; thus this option also brings in the credibility of EPA into analysis. If EPA is not credible, its listings might not be worth considering.
However, EPA as the name suggests should be taken as trust-worthy unless suggested otherwise and this statement just says that "There are many other paints with more VOCs than Eco-paint", which doesn't weaken the argument.
