The principal at Ames Middle School hired a new math teacher, Mr. Jordan, after the former math teacher retired. After Mr. Jordan had worked for a year, the principal received some unsavory reviews of his performance. In fact, five letters were received from students, all stating that they hated Mr. Jordan. The principal took these statements to heart and fired Mr. Jordan, assuming that if a few students did not like Mr. Jordan, then most others felt the same way.

All of the following, if true, cast doubt on the advisability of the principal’s decision to fire Mr. Jordan EXCEPT:
(A) Students who like a teacher are much less likely to tell anyone about it than students who dislike a teacher.
(B) Most students who took Mr. Jordan’s class hated the subject matter.
(C) Principals throughout the state receive an average of 10 complaint letters about each math teacher every year.
(D) The five letters did not explicitly state the name of the disliked teacher, but the principal assumed that since there had never been complaints about anyone before, the students must have been referring to Mr. Jordan.
(E) All teachers throughout the state get at least five complaint letters in their first year of teaching at a new school.

Indirectly, we are supposed to find the choice that weakens the reason why the principal fired Mr.Jordan.
a) If the students, other than the five students, liked Mr.Jordan then its not necessary that they must tell this to the principle.
b) Irrelevant. So what if the students hated the subject.
c) If the average number of complaint letters received by the principals throughout the state is 10, and since # of letters received by the principal against Mr.Jordan is 5, then its clear that Mr.Jordan was doing a fine job and there must be some problem with the principal's brain when he fired him.
d) Poor assumption
e) If every teachers gets 5 complaints against him/her on an average, then whats wrong with Mr. Jordan when he also got not more than 5 letters.

Its not a GMAT type question. Those who are preparing for it, be wary.

Why is it not a GMAT question? I've seen plenty such questions around.

Hi Aniteka.

This question comes from McGraw-Hill's LAST, 2011 Edition - 6 practice tests. Even though both LSAT and GMAT have CR, they are quite different. If you are really good in logical thinking and want to be challenged, LSAT - CR is the good source to practice. Otherwise, you will be better off to stick to GMAT-like questions.

If you want this material to practice. I'm more than happy to share.

Let me know, if you need help.

PS: I agree with Marcab, I will stick to GMAT-like questions.
