Columnist: In a recent article an economist argues that corporations have no responsibility to society beyond obeying the law and maximizing profit for shareholders. But in a different article the same economist endorses the view that corporations ought to make financial contributions to social programs in the communities in which they are located. Thus theeconomist is caught in a contradiction.
The columnist’s argument is questionable because it fails to rule out the possibility that

(A) corporations make non-financial contributions to social programs within their local communities

(B) many shareholders of corporations are in favor of their corporations making contributions to community social programs

(C) social programs have an economic effect on a community and are therefore part of the domain of economists

(D) financial contributions to community social programs improve a corporation’s image in a way that improves its profitability

(E) a corporation’s making financial contributions to community social programs violates no laws

I was stuck between A & D.But D makes more sense as it takes into account both profitability & financial contributions.
According to the economist corporations only two jobs is to obey the law and maximise profit for shareholders,and D justifies both and is a link between contribution & profitability.

+1 for D

Corporations responsibility - obey law and maximize profit.
Another action for corporation - make financial contribution to social programs
The contradiction:- either making financial contribution to social programs is unlawful or it does not maximize profit.

(A) corporations make non-financial contributions to social programs within their local communities
--> The argument does not talk about non-financial contributions.

(B) many shareholders of corporations are in favor of their corporations making contributions to community social programs
--> The contradiction still exists.

(C) social programs have an economic effect on a community and are therefore part of the domain of economists
--> Although social programs are part of domain of economist, it can have a negative economic effect resulting in reduction in profits.

(D) financial contributions to community social programs improve a corporation’s image in a way that improves its profitability
--> This seems correct as making financial contribution to social programs improves profits. Though, this statement does not talk about financial contributions being lawful.

(E) a corporation’s making financial contributions to community social programs violates no laws
--> This seems correct too.

D & E both seem to carry equal weightage here.
I selected D though assuming that it is implicit that making financial contribution to social programs is lawful.
