A pharmaceutical company tested a new painkiller on 1,000 lab rats that were fed large doses of the painkiller for a two-month period. By the end of the experiment, 39 of the rats had died. The company concluded that the painkiller was sufficiently safe to test on humans.

Which of the following, if true, provides the most support for the pharmaceutical company’s conclusion?

A. The amount of painkiller fed to the rats was substantially greater, in relation to body mass, than the dosage any human would take under normal circumstances.
B. Because of the different body chemistry of humans and rats, some compounds can be dangerous for rats but safe for humans, and vice versa.
C. Tests of this same painkiller on dogs showed that 3 out of 50 dogs developed lesions on their livers during the course of the experiment.
D. The researchers found that during the experiment, the rats showed a significantly lower sensitivity to pain than rats do under normal circumstances.
E. In an experiment of this length with this number of rats, it is not unusual for up to 50 rats to die during the experiment for reasons unrelated to the experiment itself.

Conclusion : very clearly
The company concluded that the painkiller was sufficiently safe to test on humans.

Premise : out of 1000 ,only 39 died.

in order for the conclusion to be true we must assume that 39 died due to reasons unrelated to the drug itself.
Only option E states that.

PreThinking:For strengthen question we need to strengthen the link between the premise and the Conclusion, since the premise is that 39 rats died but even then the painkiller is safe for human testing.why is it safe one would think..it may be that the number of rats die during the tests is larger than in current scenario and the death rate is lower than usual.Or humans would be tested with significantly lower doses than rats.

Option E iterates the prethinking and is the correct answer.No need of POE.

A is wrong because we have better option E , which clearly joins premise and conclusion. Option E mentions another factors to be the cause of death that is usual in such experiments whereas Option A talks about dosage amount , which doesn't justify the death of only 39 rats.

Official Explanation

If it is normal for up to 50 rats to die, then the death of 39 rats does not in itself suggest that the new drug is inherently unsafe. Answers A and B help explain why the rats died, but they do not give strong evidence that whatever killed the rats would not be equally dangerous for humans.
