Hi ahabib ,
On the same boat here mate. I did choose the correct option but I rejected A only because it cannot explicitly be derived from the passage given.
After spending a bit of time on it, I reckon I do understand what the passage says.

Specialized training is a requirement, a necessary condition but not a sufficient condition to become a judge.
Lets say that if one has got such specialized training, he/she could either become judge or become literature professor.

If specialized training (A), then literature professor(B) or judge(C).
This automatically become If not A, then not B, and not C.

Only option E could be derived from the given passage. It is given in the passage that the vast majority of the reading public does not have access to this specialized training. i.e. Not A or no training. If not A, then not B.

Hope this helps.

I now see how this is a possibility, although it's a stretch imo.

I was also between (A) and (E), and I agree that (E) is more easily derived from the passage.

Thanks for the help!

I fell into the same trap on this apparently straightforward question. I bolded what I believe is the key to your question "John's literature professor believes that the ability to judge the greatness of literacy works accurately can be acquired only after years of specialized training"

Going through the training CAN give you that ability, but it's not for certain.

John's literature professor believes that the ability to judge the greatness of literacy works accurately can be acquired only after years of specialized training. Such training is, in fact, what is required to become a literature professor. She is also well aware the the vast majority of the reading public does not have access to this specialized training.

Which one of the following statements must be true if what Johns literature professor believes is true?

(A) John's literature professor can judge the greatness of works of literature accurately

(B) Anyone who is not a literature professor cannot judge the greatness of works of literature accurately

(C) Specialized training like that received by John's literature professor should be more broadly available to members of the reading public

(D) Literature professors do not belong to the reading public

(E) The vast majority of the reading public is unable to judge the greatness of works of literature accurately

BID (Boil it down): training required to judge, training leads to a professorship, not everyone can get training.

(A) John's literature professor can judge the greatness of works of literature accurately

Training required to judge, training leads to professorship.... Professorship DOES NOT EQUAL judging ability

(B) Anyone who is not a literature professor cannot judge the greatness of works of literature accurately

Almost fell for this one :shocked .... Same as A ... Professorship DOES NOT EQUAL judging ability .... Somebody could do a Ph.D (Training) and gain the ability to critique, but not be a professor!

(C) Specialized training like that received by John's literature professor should be more broadly available to members of the reading public

Missing the point entirely ...

(D) Literature professors do not belong to the reading public

See D

(E) The vast majority of the reading public is unable to judge the greatness of works of literature accurately

DING DING DING ...

Such training is, in fact, what is required to become a literature professor. : from this statement, can't we assume that literature professor has such training that is why he/she is literature professor. therefore , he /she can judge.

please clarify...

The doubt between A and E can be resolved by only one reason There is no conformation that John's literature professor has gone through years of specialized training. It may chance that while he became professor specialised training wasn't required condition of being a professor.

(A) John's literature professor can judge the greatness of works of literature accurately
We don't know this for sure. He might not be that good at judging even with specialized training.

(B) Anyone who is not a literature professor cannot judge the greatness of works of literature accurately
Extreme (Anyone)

(C) Specialized training like that received by John's literature professor should be more broadly available to members of the reading public
Not a conclusion but a suggestion

(D) Literature professors do not belong to the reading public. (Irrelevant, cannot conclude)

(E) The vast majority of the reading public is unable to judge the greatness of works of literature accurately (CORRECT)
For sure we can say (conclude from the argument) that the vast majority of the public cannot judge the greatness of literature work

For me it came down to "Such training" vs "this training" i.e. "such (similar) training" =/= "this specialized training"

The last sentence is what must precede the conclusion/inference which we are looking for.
True that A can eliminated based on necessary/sufficiency condition, but above logic works(atleast here). Additionally, A is a stretch in the sense that whether can we say that explicitly.

Answer E.

specialised criteria may not be the sole criteria --- So A is out
