Library preservationist: Due to the continual physical deterioration of the medieval manuscripts in our library's collection, we have decided to
restore most of our medieval manuscripts that are of widely acknowledged
cultural significance, though this means that some medieval manuscripts whose
authenticity is suspect will be restored. However, only manuscripts whose
safety can be ensured during the restoration process will be restored, and manuscripts that are not
frequently consulted by researchers will not be restored.
If all of the library preservationist's statements are true, which one of the following must be true of the medieval manuscripts in the library's collection?
(A)
Some of the medieval manuscripts whose authenticity is suspect are frequently consulted by researchers
(B)
All of the medieval manuscripts widely acknowledged to be of cultural significance are manuscripts whose safety can be ensured during the restoration process.
(C)
All of the medieval manuscripts whose safety can be ensured during the restoration process are frequently consulted by researchers
(D) The medieval manuscripts
most susceptible to deterioration are those
most frequently consulted by researchers
(E)
None of the medieval manuscripts that are rarely consulted by researchers is widely acknowledged to be of cultural significance
I was all over the place in this one and answered D. However, post answering i analysed and realised my mistakes(must be true are my nemesis
). Here's my observations.
MM that hold cultural significance are going get restored, not all but most of them. During this process some MMs with suspected authenticity issues may get restored. BUT it is sure that only if safety is ensured during the restoration process, manuscripts would be restored. Those manuscript that are not frequently consulted would not be restored.
The structure of the passage is as follows:
1. What is already true is that MMs hold cultural significance.
2. What is going to happen is restoration of MMs.
3. How it is going to get decided is what we need to figure out.
For the 3rd point, three parameters are there - authenticity(A), safety(S) and frequent consultation(C). I don't know but venn diagram, wherein the three parameters are the circles, helps in eliminating 2-3 options. I leave the diagram for people to make by themselves to understand better.
Among the 5 choices B can be eliminated easily - too loose a statement. Similarly, C can be eliminated as there are those that are not frequently consulted and not authentic, and those that are not frequently consulted and authentic as well. E is somewhat opposite as far as logic is concerned, but more importantly this choice deals with 'rarely consulted MMs that are not widely acknowledged to be of cultural significance'. This pushes to make another venn diagram with parameters not frequently consulted(C'), unauthentic(A') and non safe(S') - may be confusing a bit. D may be true but not must be true - it is in general we may assume that it might be the case and thus must be true, eventually making it a trap answer.
Only A is left and it is the right answer. Reason being if some MMs are unauthentic then some might definitely be frequently consulted. Since each parameter has an counter part there exists 8 possibilities(2*2*2) among which finding a must be true becomes a little easier.
Answer A.
