In the city of Ocean View, escalating prices of single family homes are forcing more and more people who work in Ocean View and wish to purchase a home to move inland, where homes are more affordable. This trend is unhealthy for Ocean View, both economically and socially. But the city can reverse the trend by providing economic incentives for home-building companies to build houses that are affordable to a greater percentage of Ocean view residents.

Which of the following, if true, would provide the most support for the argument above?

(A) Workers who commute a short distance to work are more productive, on average, than workers who commute further.
--no one is talking about productivity

(B) Most of Ocean View???s workers would rather reside in Ocean View than in other areas.
-- important for the argument to hold. People should want to reside there for breaking the trend.

(C) The supply of rental housing in Ocean View currently exceeds the demand for such housing.
--opposite and not addressing expensive housing

(D) At present, there are a significant number of lots in Ocean View on which it is possible to build new single-family homes.
--has to be true, but less than A cause even if the homes are built on the land and no one wants to live, it'll not be helpful

(E) Home builders generate a greater profit from building expensive homes than less expensive ones.
--opposite

please let me know where I am going wrong in B and D

Hi everyone,

I was also confused between B and D but I marked D.

The primary reason I gave it to myself while making that decision was even though (B) Most of Ocean View???s workers would rather reside in Ocean View than in other areas if that's true we don't know from the passage that all the ocean view resident works in the ocean view also. and that's the reason I didn't mark A.

and D made sense because the passage mentions "Home builder" and if there are no lots in the area what's the point of giving incentive.

so to strengthen the plan of providing incentives to Home builders owner there has to be lots to build it.

Please reply if you think my logic is wrong because I am here to learn

Thanks so much.!

B is incorrect because the premise in argument states that escalating prices are forcing more and more people who work in ocean view and wish to purchase a home to move inland

this has the same meaning as most oceanview workers would rather reside in ocean view

because prices are forcing them otherwise they wish to purchase

now you may say

they may purchase but not reside(they may rent it out) but look at the complete phrase

in the end of sentence it is written that to inland

so they must have bought the house to stay in itrdrdrd1201

Important to understand what js the question asking to support.

1. The trend of movement is unhealthy. Then A looks correct

2. Giving incentive can help. Option D is correct.

A is not the answer because argument is not about whether that trend is unhealthy for oceanview
Rather it is about whether that unhealthy trend can be reversedSirha

I am stuck with b and d, but I choose d finally. I suppose that the prob is mainly about the price, not willingness. if the price does not go down, the people still wish to live outside. the premise of people want to stay in ocean view is the decreasing price. therefore, d (the feasibility of decreasing price) > b. (willingness)

(A) Workers who commute a short distance to work are more productive, on average, than workers who commute further.

This is wrong because thee main thesis or focus for the passage is: proposing the city to support home-building companies to build more affordable house. Yes it will be more benefitial for workers but that is not the focus. Thus False

(B) Most of Ocean View’s workers would rather reside in Ocean View than in other areas.

This is a good point, since such statement provide us a reason or demand for the proposal. However, such information was provided in the passage " escalating prices of single family homes are forcing more and more people who work in Ocean View and wish to purchase a home to move inland." It is tricky, but the word Forcing established the point people wants to stay at Ocean View more than others. Since it has already been provided, it is definitely not the most supportive, thus False.

(C) The supply of rental housing in Ocean View currently exceeds the demand for such housing.

Support > Demand, this statement undermines the proposal. False.

(D) At present, there are a significant number of lots in Ocean View on which it is possible to build new single-family homes.

We are provided with more information that addressed to our proposal target interest. When we are being asked about strengthening statement, think about whether such statement can be retructured into a "Moreover" clause. For example in this case,

"City can reverse the trend by providing economic incentives for home-building companies to build houses that are affordable to a greater percentage of Ocean view residents." Moreover "At present, there are a significant number of lots in Ocean View on which it is possible to build new single-family homes."

The statement flows thus Keep

(E) Home builders generate a greater profit from building expensive homes than less expensive ones.

Like choice A, we do not care wether the home builders will benefit from the operation, we are proposing to the city. This statement diverged the focus from the city of the city to the Home-builderss interest, it is out-of-scope. Thus Flase.

D is the correct answer.

*Please raise me up for more people to see if you find this helpful. I am studying for my GMAT too, just trying to help. Thank you :)
