The argument exists that alcohol advertising plays an important role in whether teens will start drinking alcoholic beverages. There has been a ban against the advertising of alcohol in Anyland for thirty years, where drinking is at least as prevalent as it is in countries where there is no such ban.

Which of the following statements would be the clearest conclusion, given the information presented above?

A The advertising of alcohol cannot be the single factor that explains the prevalence of drinking among teens.
B Teens who drink, or are starting to drink alcohol, do not do so because of advertising.
C Banning alcohol advertising does not cause a decrease in the consumption of alcohol.
D More teens drink when they are not exposed to alcohol advertising as opposed to when they are.
E Most teens who drank thirty years ago did not simply stop drinking when the ban on advertising alcohol was introduced.

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

This is a supply the conclusion question.

Identify the premises of the argument. First, alcohol advertising plays an influential role in whether a teen will begin drinking alcoholic beverages. Second, in Anyland, where there is a ban against the advertising of alcohol, teen drinking is as prevalent as in countries that have no such ban.

If possible, try to anticipate what the conclusion might be. One could deduce from the premises that alcohol advertising cannot be the only thing that influences a teen's decision to drink alcohol.

Eliminate answer choices that do not deal with both premises. Choices B, C and D negate the first premise, and are thus eliminated. Choice E does not really deal with either premise, as it refers to teens who already drink alcoholic beverages. Choice A satisfies both premises by acknowledging that alcohol advertising is a factor influencing a teen's decision to drink, but also acknowledges the second premise by stating that it cannot be the only factor influencing a teen's decision to drink alcoholic beverages.

Hi,

The first sentence mentions "teens", whereas when the prevalence of drinking is talked about, no such specific demographic is mentioned. Thus, although A option might be more apt than others...should the question be modified?

Since option A specifically talks about teens, whereas given the facts in the passage, it could be true that teen drinking is actually low in Anyland.

That's a fair observation - I did consider this aspect while trying to solve this.

The first sentence establishes that we're talking about the impact of advertising alcohol to teens. Later, there's no mention of "teens" but there is mention of the advertisement ban being in place for over 30 years. Hence, anyone who was a teen 30-years ago (13 to 19 then) will be bordering 50 today, and there are new teenagers today under the purview of the ban. So, a sizeable demographic (13 to 50), despite being exposed to alcohol ads, continues to drink alcohol in equal measure as countries without such a ban. So, in highlighting teenagers in the first sentence, even if we assume the second sentence doesn't highlight teens specifically - it does cover a sizeable bunch of people and does establish that "teenagers - today's and 30-years-ago's" aren't reacting to the advertisements as intended.
