The college women’s team finished 5th in the Divisions, the college fired the teams General Manager. The team manager sued the college stating that the college team topped the rankings.
(A) The team won all of its “away” games during the season in question.
Option A is wrong because we don’t know the number of away matches or home matches. Winning the away matches doesn’t mean the rankings improved or decreased. Hence, irrelevant option.
(B) Attendance at the volleyball team’s games was up 35% from the year before.
Option B - mentions the attendance popularity for the women’s college team, popularity doesn’t correlate with the rankings. Hence, wrong.
(C) Of the starting team, three team members were unable to play for at least half the season because of injuries.
Option C - which speaks about three star players absent for half of the matches. Every team has substitute players to play the matches, after that the ranking is determined. Hence, absence of players doesn’t mean the rankings fell. A team determines its core team and substitutes after taking every combinations and uncertainties into consideration.
(D) There are 80 teams in this particular volleyball team’s division.
Option D - is the correct option. As there were 80 teams, and the college team finished 5th. (5/80) makes the college team amongst the top 7% of the divisions team. This supports the team managers claim that the college team topped the list.
(E) The team lost more games this year than it did the year before.
Option E - this can be taken in either way. May be the total games lost this year can be 4, while the previous year games lost can be 2 or 3. This doesn’t matter to the question in place.

If the team came 5th and won most of its matches, then it means that it played a much higher number of total matches - Thus resolving the apparent contradiction.
