though most tempted one I didnt choose D since, how standing 5th among its division of 80 teams made it among the top teams in the country? no idea how many such divisions in the country or how many teams these divisions have or what is the team's overall ranking among all teams in the country?
so went with A because, though it stood 5th in its division the team had a wonderful outdoor season 100% success rate would have resulted among the top teams in the country. rest all choices not much relevant.
A or D????

Hi,

While option D) is correct, the reasoning needs fixing. There is no link between the number of total matches played and being in the top teams in the country.

D) resolves this because if there are 80 teams in the division, then finishing 5th does place them in the top teams in the country and helps resolve the paradox

Hope this helps!

If the team came 5th and won most of its matches, then it means that it played a much higher number of total matches - Thus resolving the apparent contradiction.
Hence, answer should be D.

Hi,

A) We have no information to link number of away matches to rankings. Plus we dont know how many away matches were played, so we cant even connect it back to rankings. Hence this option wouldnt help resolve the paradox. You can refer to my reply above for D) if further clarification is needed for that one..

Hope this helps!

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

The women’s volleyball team at a local college finished fifth in its division, prompting the college to fire the team’s general manager. The manager responded by suing the college, saying that the team’s performance put it among the top teams in the country.

Which of the following statements, if true, would support the claim of the team’s manager, and resolve the apparent contradiction?

(A) The team won all of its “away” games during the season in question.

(B) Attendance at the volleyball team’s games was up 35% from the year before.

(C) Of the starting team, three team members were unable to play for at least half the season because of injuries.

(D) There are 80 teams in this particular volleyball team’s division.

(E) The team lost more games this year than it did the year before.

D

The manager was apparently fired because of his team’s end-of-season statistics. If this made you wonder if the statistics were actually representative, your thinking was right on the money. To support the manager’s claim we have to show that the team’s fifth-place finish was actually better than it looked. Choices A, B, and C, while generally positive about the team (and by extension, perhaps, its manager) are outside the scope of the argument. Choice E actually puts the team’s performance in a more negative light. On the other hand, Choice D puts the team’s fifth-place finish in a very positive perspective: If the division was made up of 80 teams, finishing in fifth place is actually extremely good. The best answer is D.
