The IT dept of a major law firm , this year has noted drop in instances of malware being found in the firm’s systems. They claim the reduction primarily to the employee digital safety guidelines published earlier, this made it less likely for the firms employees to accidentally download any malware.
We need to find : if true, would most seriously weaken the IT department’s explanation for the lower incidence of the malware being found on the firm’s computer systems?
A. Because of improved system diagnostic software, many system issues that until this year would have been identified as malware are now correctly identified as system issues.
This option seems a plausible answer, as prior to Improvement of System Diagnostic Software, the issues which were reported as malware, has now been correctly identified and categorised as System issues. So, we see a drop in malware instances, which is attributed to the new system diagnostic software and not because of digital safety guidelines (as claimed by IT dept).
B. The digital safety guidelines educated all employees about the risk of visiting suspicious websites on the internet.
This is a factual statement, and this doesn’t mean all the employees followed it religiously. Correlation between awareness and implementation seems wrong here.
C. Many new digital safety measures have been instituted by the law firm in the last two years.
This option mentions the steps taken in this regard for the past two years. This is entirely wrong, as if fails to address the core issue of reduction in malware and its link to digital safety guidelines. We cannot be sure which new digital safety measure provided fruitful results. Hence, wrong.
D. Because of improvements to anti-virus software this year, malware infections can be resolved more easily.
The option speaks about the improvements in anti virus software, which prevents the incidents and resolves the infections. The option mentions a probable direction of how this anti virus software can work. There might be cases where the malware infection is not detected or resolved. Even the incidence might have been unnoticed even after the new anti virus software put into place.
Finding (reporting of instance’s) and resolving it after finding it are two different aspects entirely. The question speaks about reduction in instances of reporting. So, the number has dropped from the initial data. Resolving doesn’t give answers to reduction in number.
Hence, Wrong.
E. The digital security standards of the law firm were brought up to the standards of its peers, seven years ago.
This option speaks about the historical path travelled and doesn’t address the issue at hand. Hence, wrong.

We have to weaken the reasoning that the decrease in instances of malware being found on the firm's computer is entirely due to the employee safety guidelines. Option A gives us a reason which weakens this by giving another reason for decrease in malware foind - and the reason is that earlier some issues which were identified as malware are no longer identified so - and instead they are thought of as system issues.
Hence, answer is A.
