During the Age of Exploration, in Europe, spices and tropical fruits were almost exclusively consumed by the wealthiest members of society; the cost and prestige of these commodities fell when they began to be consumed by the common man. Thus, if common people begin consuming commodities, such as caviar, that are currently exclusively associated with the upper class, the cost and prestige of these commodities will also fall.

The argument above is based on

A) a separate argument that employs circular reasoning
B) an effort to disprove a generality through an exception
C) a parallelism between a historical phenomenon and a future event
D) an appeal to commonly held beliefs and values
E) a critique of the opposition’s character

During European exploration age, the spices and tropical fruits were consumed by wealthiest people, and these products are kept aloof from the common public. Once the common people started consuming these products, then cost and prestige of the products fell down.

In the same manner, caviar which is being considered as a product consumed only by the wealthy will experience downfall in cost and prestige , when the common people have their tastebuds experience it.

The argument is based on . ?

A) a separate argument that employs circular reasoning

Circular arugument is that A —-> B —-> C —-> A . This is not happening wrt to the question, we have two different experiences, one historic and the other a futuristic event that may experience the same outcomes. Hence, Wrong.

B) an effort to disprove a generality through an exception .

Generality means something that happens in general. For example dog tends to bark when they see a stranger person, this is a general pattern. But, my dog Deo doesn’t bark when it sees strangers, but attacks them instantly. This is an exception. Nothing of this sort is being explained. Hence, Wrong.

C) a parallelism between a historical phenomenon and a future event.

This is the correct answer. As this draws parallel between two events - historic and future events. The European spices and tropical fruits being the historical event, which is equated with the caviar. The commonality is the outcome of the event when common people get a chance to experience it.

D) an appeal to commonly held beliefs and values.

This is wrong, as commonly held belief and values are something which is closer to heart and which we uphold them of higher esteem. Here, we speak about tropical fruits, spices and caviar. None of which is a belief.

E) a critique of the opposition’s character.

This is also an irrelevant and out of scope answer. As, it explains critique made on opposition character which to related to the question context even a bit.

option C

Explanation

The argument points to a historical phenomenon: during the Age of Exploration, when spices and tropical fruits became widely consumed, their cost and prestige declined. It then uses that historical pattern to predict a future (or hypothetical) outcome: if commodities like caviar become commonly consumed, their cost and prestige will also fall.

This is a typical reasoning drawing a conclusion about a future or different situation based on similarities to a past one.

A: There’s no circular reasoning here.

B: The argument doesn’t use an exception to disprove a general rule.

D: It’s not appealing to shared values or beliefs, just historical evidence.

E: There’s no attack on any opponent.
