Total weight increase for the 10 men is 1.5*10=15. So the new man brings 68+15=83kg

10*x - Initial Total (and x is initial average)

=> (10x - 68 + y)/10 = x + 3/2

=> 10x - 68 + y = 10x + 15

=> y = 83

The average weight of 10 men is increased by 1 ½ kg when one of the men who weighs 68 kg is replaced by a new man. What is the weight of the new man?

(A) 80 kg

(B) 83 kg

(C) 70 kg

(D) 75 kg

(E) 85 kg

We can let the initial average = x/10 in which x = the sum of the 10 men. Thus, the new average is:

(x/10) + 3/2 = (x/10) + 15/10 = (x + 15)/10

We can let n = the weight of the new man:

(x + 15)/10 = (x - 68 + n)/10

x + 15 = x - 68 + n

83 = n

Answer: B
