Word problems are tricky in somehow more than other problem because you have the additional step to translate.

Breaking the problem: Geoff how many votes he receives ?? 30 votes

he needs 3571 more votes so : 30+3571= 3601

Now what's the problem wants ?? a x %........3601 is what % of total votes 6000........translating: 3601 = x/100 * 6000 ---> x = 60.01666666

x= 60 %..........D

kudos if you want, of course.

should not the question be asking for the approximate value of x, sine the answer is not quite 60%

3601/6000 = 0.60016666666

should not the question be asking for the approximate value of x, sine the answer is not quite 60%

3601/6000 = 0.60016666666

We are told that a candidate needs to receive more than x% of the vote.
We got that a candidate needs to receive more than 3,600 votes (3,601).

3,600 is 60% of total votes. Thus x=60%.

Hope it's clear.

Geoff received 0.5/100*6,000=30 votes.
He needed 30+3571=3601 votes, So
0.6*X=3,601

Since a candidate needed to receive more than x% then x=60%.
