\(\frac{1}{0.75-1}=\)

(A) -4
(B) -0.25
(C) 0.25
(D) 0.75
(E) 4

Solution:

We start by subtracting 1 from 0.75 in the denominator of 1/(0.75 – 1). This yields:

1/-0.25

Next we convert 0.25 to a fraction, so 0.25 = 1/4. This now gives us:

1/(-1/4) = 1 x -4 = -4

The answer is A.

\(\frac{1}{0.75-1}=\)

(A) -4
(B) -0.25
(C) 0.25
(D) 0.75
(E) 4

Useful fraction property: 1/(a/b) = b/a
For example: 1/(2/3) = 3/2
And 1/(19/7) = 7/19

So, 1/(0.75 - 1) = 1/(-0.25) = 1/(-1/4) = -4/1 = -4

Alternatively, 1/(0.75 - 1) = 1/(3/4 - 4/4) = 1/(-1/4) = -4

It can be written another way instead of -4:
(-1)^3

We solve the denominator first
writing 0.75 as 75/100 and 1 as 100/100
Therefore (75/100-100/100) = -25/100 = -1/4(this is our simplified denominator)
1/(-1/4) = -4

Tackle the denominator first: 0.75-1= -0.25

You're left with 1/-0.25. -> It could be rewritten 1/(-1/4)= -1*4= -4
