The remainder of the division of a number by 63 is 27. What will be the remainder when that number is divided by 7?

A) 4
B) 5
C) 6
D) 7
E) 8

Please explain

Source: 4gmat

The easiest way to solve this question is by plugging in a number. Here are the steps I followed:

1) Choose a number X that when divided by 63 gives you 27 as a remainder. So I did x = 63 + 27 = 90. (90/63 = 1R27)
2) Divide that number by 7. 90/7 = 12R6

Since the remainder is 6, the correct answer is choice C.

These types of problems typically come in a data sufficiency type question, in which case you would have tried to validate the pattern by trying one or two more numbers. But since the question here is very straight forward, you don't need to do any more work.

Actually this problem didnt come with any options.It was given for conceptual understanding.

Considering that no options are given, how would you solve this question?

7 is a multiple of 63;

so if dividing by 63 gives a remainder 27, then continue dividing 27 by 7

27 divided by 7 gives remainder 6

Answer = 6 = C

The remainder of the division of a number by 63 is 27: \(x=63q+27=63q+21+6=7(9q+3)+6\). The first term 7(9q+3) is divisible by 7, hence the remainder will be only from the second term. 6 divided by 7 yields the remainder of 6.

Answer: C.

sol:

let the required number be x

x=63a+27

rem (x/7)= rem (63a+27)/7
= rem (63a/7) + rem (27/7)
= 0 + 6
=6
