Convert dollars to cents to make your life easier.

490 = 175 + (15q)
315 = 15q
q = 21

Therefore you´ll have 21 quarters of a mile plus the additional quarter of a mile.
That´s 22/4 miles or 5.5 miles.

Easy of calculations consider multiplying all numbers by 100 and then doing calculations orally.

Subtract 490-175==> 490-200+25==>290+25==> 315
Now divide 315/15= 21. This is the total quarter miles that you will travel with 0.15$. Hence total number of miles =21/4=5miles + 1 quarter.

Add 1st quarter for the intial 1.75$ which brings the total to 5 and 1/2 miles.

Answer = D. 5 1/2 miles

First quarter charge = 1.75

As soon as first quarter travel ends, balance = 4.90 - 1.75 = 3.15

Quarters in balance amount \(= \frac{3.15}{0.15} = 21\)

Total quarters = 1+21 = 22

Total miles \(= \frac{22}{4} = 5 \frac{2}{4} = 5 \frac{1}{2}\)

(D) If we start out with $4.90 and have to spend $1.75 for the first quarter-mile, we will have $3.15 left to spend on quarter-mile intervals.

Since $3.15/$0.15 = 21, we can buy 21 more quarter-miles, and will travel 22 quarter miles in all:
22 × 1/4 = 5 1/2 miles.

The correct answer is choice (D).

Hi All,

Since the answers are NOT nice 'round' numbers, you can use a variation on TESTing THE ANSWERS - but instead of using the answers that are given, you can use round numbers to eliminate options.

We're told that the first 1/4 mile costs $1.75 and each additional 1/4 mile costs $0.15. We're asked for the maximum distance that could be traveled for $4.90

Based on the answer choices, I'll start with what a 5 mile trip cost...
The first mile would cost $1.75 + 3($0.15) = $2.20
Each additional mile would cost 4($0.15) = $0.60
So a 5 mile trip would cost $2.20 + 4($0.60) = $2.20 + $2.40 = $4.60

Since we're dealing with $4.90, we will clearly end up going more than 5 miles (so we can eliminate Answers A, B and C)... but we wouldn't travel that much more than 5 miles... From here, it's fairly easy to determine that the additional $0.30 would get us an extra 1/2 mile.

Organize unites

First mile cost =$1.75
each mile cost = $0.15
Total cost of a trip= $4.90

Setting up equation:

Cost of first mail + cost of each quarter * number of quarter (x) = 4.90

1.75 + (0.15) * x = 4.9

(0.15) * (x) = 3.15

(15) * (x) = 315....x = 21 but this number of quarters.. Converting it to miles = 21 * 1/4 = 5 1/4 (after first quarter)

Do not forget first quarter to added to the above

maximum distance = 5 1/4 + 1/4 = 5 1/2
