The price of a certain car this year is $ 42,000, which is 25 percent greater than the cost of the car last year. What was the price of the car last year?

The price of the car last year = 1/4 th less than the price this year = 3/4 of the price of this year =(3/4)*42000= 3*10500=$31,500.

Hence the Answer is C

The price of a certain car this year is $ 42,000, which is 25 percent greater than the cost of the car last year. What was the price of the car last year?

A. $27,000
B. $28,000
C. $31,500
D. $33,600
E. $34,500

We can deconstruct this problem in a few simple steps if we read carefully

x(1.25) = 42000

x(5/4) = 42

336*5 /4 = 420

Thus
"D"

D. $33,600
E. $34,500

Since the price of a $42,000 car is 25% greater than last year’s price, we have:

(last year’s price)(1.25) = 42,000

last year’s price = 42,000/1.25 = 33,600
