Thirty percent of the women in a college class are science majors, and the non-science majors make up 80% of the class. What percentage of the men are science majors if 40% of the class are men?

A. 2%
B. 5%
C. 28%
D. 30%
E. 45%

Say there are 100 people in the class.
Non science majors make up 80% of the class so we have 80 non science majors and 20 science majors.
40% of class are men so we have 40 men and 60 women.
30% of women are science majors so 30% of 60 is 18 women science majors.
Out of 20 total science majors, 18 are women so 2 are men.
So 2 of the 40 men are science majors which gives us a percentage of 2/40 * 100 = 5%

A. 2%
B. 5%

E. 45%

We can let the total number of students in the class be 100. Since non-science majors make up 80% of the class, science majors make up 20% of the class. Thus, we can say there are 20 science majors. Also, since men make up 40% of the class, women make up 60% of the class, and thus we can say there are 40 men and 60 women in the class. Furthermore, since 30% of the women are science majors:

0.3 x 60 = 18 women are science majors.

Therefore, 20 - 18 = 2 men are science majors.

Since there are 40 men in the class, the percentage of men who are science majors is 2/40 = 1/20 = 0.05 = 5%.

Let the total number of people in the class be 100. Given men are 40 % and women are 60 %. It is given that 30% of women are science majors. We have 18 SM among women and 42 non SM among women. It is also given that there are 80 non SM in the class. 38 men are non SMs. 2 men become SMs then.

We need to find (2/40)*100 % i.e. , 5%.
Option B it is !!
