Oops Bunuel Looks like you have corrected it already. Will keep in mind for the next time.

Thanks!

You named the topic: "PS-At the beginning of 2011, Company X created" whereas it should have been "At the beginning of 2011, Company X created a list of n charities, and", without PS (first sentences of the question). This way our search & similar topics feature will identify similar question properly.

Sol:

Let profit be "P"

for n charities - each get p/n
when a charities are removed - each get p/(n-a)

increase will be (p/(n-a)) - (p/n) = pa/(n-a)*n

Increase % will be (pa/(n-a)*n) / (p/n) multiplied by 100.

result will be 100a/(n-a)

At the beginning of 2011, Company X created a list of n charities, and committed to donating 10% of its pro ts for the year to these charities, donating an equal amount to each charity. However, during the year, Company X removed a charities from this list, and donated 10% of its pro t in equal amounts to each of the remaining charities on the list. If the Wesley Homeless Shelter wasone of the charities on the list which received a donation from Company X, which of the following represents, in terms of n and a, the percent increase in the amount the Wesley Homeless Shelter received because the a charities were removed from the list?

A) 100n/a
B) 100a/(n-a)
C) 100(n-a)/n
D) 100n/(n-a)
E) 100(n-a)/a

%increase:
after-before/after•100
[(p/n-a)-(p/n)]/p/n•100
[(p/n-a)-(p/n)]•n/p•100
[(p/n-a)(n/p)-1]•100
[(n/n-a)-1]•100
[(n-(n-a))/(n-a)]•100
[a/(n-a)]•100
100a/(n-a)

Answer (B).

Im using smart number for this one:

Assume the profit is 1000, the company will donate 10%, which will be 100, and will be donated to 10 charities, later 3 charities will be cut down

The original donation of Wesley is : 100 / 10 = 10

However, there will only be 7 charities, thus the new profit will be : 100 / 7

The change is : 100 / 7 - 10 = 30 / 7

The percent increase is : 100*(30 / 7 ) / 10 which is 300/7

Plug the number back in (a = 3, n = 10) and B is our answer

Better to assume 100 as profit, and 10 charities, and remove 5 charities so it will be 20 profit instead of 10 from one. So it is 100% increase, now just sub in all the answers and boom B is our answer.
