Hi All,

Certain Quant questions can me made easier to deal with if you 'convert' the given information from one format to another. In this case, we can rewrite the two percentages as fractions...

60% = 3/5
87.5% = 7/8

The given information can then be used to create the following equation:

(3/5)(X) = (7/8)(Y)

We're asked for the value of 12X/Y...

We can manipulate the above equation to get a value for X/Y...

(3/5)(X) = (7/8)(Y)

X/Y = (7/8)/(3/5)

X/Y = (7/8)(5/3) = 35/24

The question asks for the value of 12X/Y, so we just have to multiply the above fraction by 12 and simplify...

12X/Y = (12)(35/24) = 35/2 = 17.5

Final Answer:
GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

EMPOWERgmatRichC how did you convert 87.5 into a fraction?

Hi Nunuboy1994,

On a few questions in the Quant section on Test Day, knowing the common fraction-to-decimal conversions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4.... 1/11) will save you some significant time. With that information, you should be able to perform faster calculations on similar fractions (or not have to do the calculations at all if you already know the result).

For example:
1/5 = 20% = .2

so 3/5 = 3(20%) = 60% = 3(.2) = .6

If you know that 1/8 = 12.5% = .125, then you should be able to recognize that...

1 - 12.5% =
1 - 1/8 =
7/8 = 87.5%

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

We need to know that 60% is \(\frac{3}{5}\) and 87.5% is \(\frac{7}{8}\).

Hence from the question stem, we can deduce that

\(\frac{3x}{5}\) = \(\frac{7y}{8}\)
x = \(\frac{35y}{24}\)

Now, in order to get the expression, \(\frac{12x}{y}\) , we can substitute this value of x :
\(12*\frac{x}{y} = \frac{(12*35)}{(24*y)}*y = \frac{35}{2}\) = 17.5(Option B)

P.S it is helpful to know, by heart the commonly used percent - fraction conversations

If xy≠0, and 60% of x equals 87.5% of y, what is the value of 12x/y?

A. 35/24
B. 35/12
C. 12
D. 17.5
E. 52.5

Since 60% = 3/5 and 87.5% = 7/8, we can create the following equation:

(3/5)x = (7/8)y

3x/5 = 7y/8

24x = 35y

12x = 17.5y

12x/y = 17.5

Because answers are spread, using approximate values would take us less than a minute to solve:

60%X=87.5%Y

X/Y=87.5/60= 90/60=3/2

12x/y= 36/2=18 (answer must a little smaller than 18) thus: 17.5 is the answer. D.

Asked: If xy≠0, and 60% of x equals 87.5% of y, what is the value of 12x/y?

60% = 3/5
87.5% = 7/8

3x/5 = 7y/8
x/y = 7*5/8*3
12x/y = 12*7*5/8*3 = 35/2 = 17.5
