Area of the square cake = 9 x 9 =81 sq.in
Area of each bar = 3/2 x 1 = 3/2
Number of bars = 81/ 3/2=54

let the cake be cut into rows and columns.
No of rows: 9/1 = 9
No. of columns: 9/1.5 = 6
Total no. of bars = 9*6 = 54
No of rows: 9/1 = 9
No. of columns: 9/1.5 = 6
Total no. of bars = 9*6 = 54
Along the length, we have to cut 9 inches into 1.5 inches slot. So, we will have 6 slots comprising of 5 lines.
Along the width, each of these 5 lines is cut into 9 pieces each.
So, total lines = 9x5 = 45.

5 lines cut will have 6 bars. We are concerned about the bars. So it should be 9*6

The area of the pan is 81 in^2 and the area of each bar is 1.5 in^2. Thus, there will be 81/1.5 = 54 bars.

This is a relatively straightforward question, especially if you draw a schematic of the problem (see attached file).
Given information:
- 9 x 9 inch square pan
- 1.5 x 1 inch bar of cake
Objective:
Determining the number of bars that would fit the square pan
Procedure:
Length-wise, for 9 inches, we would have 6 bars of cake. This comes from dividing the length of the bar by that of the pan: \(\frac{9}{1.5} = 6\)
Width-wise, for 9 inches, we would have 9 bars of cake. This is evident as the width of the bar is 1 inch and that of the pan is 9 inches.
Therefore, the total number of bars that would fit the square pan is: \(6 * 9 = 54\)
This corresponds to answer A.
QED.

Hey,
One easy way to think about it is to think how many bars will fit in the width
Each bar is 1" wide and the pan is 9" wide
That means 9 bars will fit widthwise
How many will fit lengthwise?
We are told that the length of the pan is 9" and the length of each bar is 1.5"
We know that two bars will fit lengthwise in a length of 3"
And we know that there are three lengths of 3" in a length of 9"
3 x 3 = 9
Therefore, that means that 3 x 2 = 6 bars will fit lengthwise in a 9" long pan
Each width will have 9 bars and each length will have 6 bars
9 x 6 = 54 bars total
The answer is A
