we have \(4\) digits to choose from. But zero cannot be the first digit. Hence,
1st digit - \(3\) possibilities
Rest of the digits - \(4\) possibilities
\(3 * 4 * 4 * 4\)
\(3 * 4^3\)
\((4-1) * 4^3\)
\(4^4 - 4^3\)

There are \(4^4\) possibilities, but if we select 0 as the first digit (1) and any repeated permutation for the other digits (\(4^3\)), it will be a 'three digit number'.
So it is \(4^4-4^3\)
