In a certain downtown office, 40 percent of the workers are men and 60 percent are women. Of the male workers, 30 percent drive to work and the rest take the train, while all of the female workers drive to work. What percent of all the workers take the train to work?

A) 18%
B) 28%
C) 42%
D) 56%
E) 70%

Given -
40% of workers are men . Total Men = 40.
60% are women. Total Women = 60.
all of the female workers drive to work = Women Who Drive = 60.
Of 40% males, 30% drive.

Calculation
It means Of 40, 30% drive = \(\frac{30}{100}*40\) = 12
Men who travels by train - 12%. Remaining = 40-12 = 28%.
Same can be understood well using below table.

TextDriveTrainTotal
Men122840
Women60060
Total7228100
.

Total workers who take train = male who take train = 28%.

I think you have interchanged the rows for drive and train.

Please have a look at it.

We can let the total number of workers = 100.

Thus, we have 40 men, and 0.7 x 40 = 28 of them take the train. Since no women take the train to work, the percent of workers who take the train to work is 28/100 = 28%.

A) 18%
B) 28%
C) 42%
D) 56%
E) 70%

In such questions, the best way forward is to take smart number

Let, Total Manpower in Office = 100
Men = 40
Women = 60

Quote:
Of the male workers, 30 percent drive to work and the rest take the train
i.e. Driving Male = 30% of 40 = 12
i.e. Male taking train = 70% of 40 = 28

Quote:
while all of the female workers drive to work
i.e. Driving Female = 100% of 60 = 60
i.e. Female taking train = 0% of 60 = 0

Total People taking Train = 28+0 = 28 (out of 100 people) = 28%
