Solution

To find:
    • The option having the closest value of the expression \(\frac{60.2}{1.03*4.86}\)

Approach and Working:
As the question is asking for the closest value and not the exact value, we can approximate the values of the individual terms to get the closest value
    • 60.2 ~ 60
    • 1.03 ~ 1
    • 4.86 ~ 5

Hence, we can write the given expression as:
    • \(\frac{60.2}{1.03*4.86} = \frac{60}{1 * 5} = \frac{60}{5} = 12\)

Hence, the correct answer is option B.

Of the following, which is the closest to \(\frac{60.2}{1.03*4.86}\) ?

A. 10

B. 12

C. 13

D. 14

E. 15

1.03 is a little bit BIGGER than 1
4.86 is a little bit SMALLER than 5
So, (1.03)(4.86) will be CLOSE TO (1)(5), aka 5

So, 60.2/(1.03 x 4.86) ≈ 60/(1.03 x 4.86)
≈ 60/5
≈ 12

Answer: B

Brent

It is because of the highlighted part

Had you multiplied the denominator and divided the Numerator your would have got the answer, REMEMBER THE RULE OF PEMDAS ?

60.2 is approixmately equal to 60
1.03 is approixmately equal to 1
4.86 is approixmately equal to 5

now solving the above problem using approximate values we will get 60/(1*5)
= 12
Therefore, the approximate value for the above problem is 12
