Cost of 1 bagel is x
Discount of $1.40 is given when 12 bagels are purchased
Bagels bought 56 and cost of each bagel came out to be 90 cents = .90
Therefore,
56(.90) = 56x -4(1.40)
50.4+ 5.6 = 56x
56 = 56x
x = $1.00

A is the correct answer

GMATinsight: although question was straight forward I wanted to know do we get questions in gmat related to cents, dollars, pennies as here in question we had to convert pennies to $ .... I initially did the mistake while solving the question by not converting it to dollar..

Archit3110

Dollar and Cents conversion is expected of us so we MUST know this.

Use of terms like pennies, quarters and dimes are unexpected.

Conversion of units such as yard to feet, pound to ounces, miles to kilometers will always be given in question

Similarly Conversion of Hours in to minutes, minutes into seconds, Feet into inches is expected of us so we should know it.

A few unit conversion for helps is as follows

1 Dollar = 100 cents
1 penny = 1 cent
1 Dime = 10 cents
1 Quarter = 25 cents
1 Nickel = 5 cents

1 yard = 3 feet
1 Pound = 16 Ounces
1 Mile = 1.6 Km = 5280 feet

At Betty's Bagels, bagels normally cost x each, but with purchases of each dozen the customer receives a discount of 1.40 dollars. Billy buys 56 bagels and calculates that he spends an average of 90 cents per bagel. What is the value of x?

A. $1.00
B. $1.40
C. $1.60
D. $2.20
E. $2.75

Solution:

The total amount of money Billy spent on the bagels is 56 * 0.90 = $50.40. Since 56 bagels are 4 dozens of bagels plus 8 more and the 4 dozens of bagels will receive a discount of 4 x 1.40 = $5.60, we can create the equation:

56x - 5.6 = 50.4

56x = 56

x = 1

Answer: A

Given: At Betty's Bagels, bagels normally cost x each, but with purchases of each dozen the customer receives a discount of 1.40 dollars. Billy buys 56 bagels and calculates that he spends an average of 90 cents per bagel.

Asked: What is the value of x?

Price of 56 bagels = 4*(12x - 1.4) + 8x = .9*56
48x - 5.6 + 8x = 50.4
56x = 56
x = $1

IMO A

We know that with the discount, the cost of a dozen bagels is 12x - 1.40 dollars. So, the cost of one bagel with the discount is (12x - 1.40)/12 dollars.

Billy bought 56 bagels, so the total cost would be 56x dollars without the discount. With the discount, the total cost would be (12x - 1.40) * (56/12) dollars.

We also know that Billy calculated an average cost of 90 cents per bagel, which is 0.90 dollars. So, we can set up the equation:

56x = 0.90 * 56 (12x - 1.40) * (56/12) = 0.90 * 56

Simplifying the second equation, we get:

(12x - 1.40) * (14/3) = 0.90 * 56 12x - 1.40 = 2.52 12x = 3.92 x = 0.326666...

Rounding to the nearest cent, we get x = $0.33. Therefore, the answer is (A) $1.00.
