4x/9=720
x=720*9/4
x=1620
Thus, total number of men, women and children is equal to 1620.
the total number of men and women = 1620-720
= 900

From the ratio, we understand that the number of men and women adds up to 5 parts. If 4 parts are equal to 720, 5 parts cannot be equal to or less than 720.

Answer options A and B can be eliminated.

Since 4 parts equals 720, 1 part equals 180 and so 5 parts will be 900. There are a total of 900 men and women in the assembly.

The correct answer option is E.

In ratios, if you are trying to find the sum of two components, it is not necessary to find the individual components and then add. You could add the ratio terms directly and find out what this sum is worth, like how we solved this problem.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION (I have seen other ways to complete this.)

In a group of people, the ratio of men to women to children is 2:3:4. That is to say 2x+3x+4x = total number of people.

The ratio of (MEN+WOMEN) to children is 5:4

First I divided 720(given number of children) by 4 = 180 and because 2x+3x+4x = 9x.... 
Next, I multiplied 180(2) = 360 MEN
Next, I multiplied 180(3) = 540 WOMEN

360+540 = 900 + 720 = 1620 (TOTAL ATTENDANCE)

Thus, there are 900 men and women in attendance.
