On an algebra quiz, 10% of the students scored 70 points, 35% scored 80 points, 30% scored 90 points, and the rest scored 100 points. What is the difference between the mean and median score of the students' scores on this quiz?

(A) 1
(B) 2
(C) 3
(D) 4
(E) 5

avg will be
10*70+35*80+30*90+25*100= 8700/100 ; 87
mean will be 50 th value ; 90
difference ; 90-87 ; 3

Assume there are 100 students in class

Weighted Average of class = (10*70 + 35*80 + 30*90 + 25*100)/100

Median of class= average score of student 50 , 51 = 90

Difference = 3

Hence, Answer is C

On an algebra quiz, 10% of the students scored 70 points, 35% scored 80 points, 30% scored 90 points, and the rest scored 100 points. What is the difference between the mean and median score of the students' scores on this quiz?

(A) 1
(B) 2
(C) 3
(D) 4
(E) 5

We can let the total number of students = n = 100, so we have:

70 points - 10 students

80 points - 35 students

90 points - 30 students

Since the rest scored 100, we know that 25% scored a 100, so:

100 points - 25 students

The formula for the position of the median is:

(n + 1)/2 = 101/2 = 50.5.

Thus, the median is the average of the 50th and 51st numbers in the set. So the median is 90.

The average score is:

[(70 x 10) + (80 x 35) + (90 x 30) + (100 x 25)] / 100 = (700 + 2800 + 2700 + 2500) / 100 = 87

The difference between the mean and the median is 3.
