In 120 lit mixture of milk and water, milk is 88 lit more than water. When ‘a’ lit of milk is taken out and (a+15) lit of water is added, ratio of milk to water in the mixture becomes 3:2. Find value of ‘a’?

Another way to think about this situation is since the total mixture is 120 L, and we know there is 88 L MORE milk than water, then the remaining 32 L (120 - 88), must be split evenly between milk and water (16 L of water, and an additional 16 L of milk. Thus we know that there are 104 L of milk and 16 L of water in the mixture. Now, we are altering the mixture to get a new ratio of milk to water. We are removing 'a' litres of milk and replacing that with 15 + 'a' litres of water. This means that the total volume of the mixture has increased by 15 L to 135 L. Our new ratio of milk to water is also now 3:2, which means of the 135 L of the new mixture, 3/5 are milk, and 2/5 are water. 3/5 of 135 is 81, so 'a' = 104 - 81 = 23. Alternatively, we could use water which is now 2/5 of 135 L, or 54 L. Thus, 54 = 16 + 15 + 'a', and 'a' = 54-31 = 23.
