How many members read at least 2 newspapers?

E_H_M.png Only English = a = 650 Only Hindi = b = 550 Only Marathi = c = 450 All three = k = 100 Now, Hindi as well as English = x+k = 200 => x = 200-100 = 100 Hindi as well as Marathi = z+k = 400 => z = 400-100 = 300 English as well as Marathi = y+k = 300 => y = 300-100 = 200 People reading At least 2 Newspaper = (People reading only 2 newspaper) + People reading all the 3 newspaper = (x+y+z)+k = (100+200+300) + 100 = 700 (C)

Number of members who read at least 2 newspapers = 300 + 200 + 100 + 100 = 700

does it make sense to take the sum of all the people that read two newspapers, and take out the number of people that read all three (as we would be double counting them) ?

This would result in (200+400+300) - 2*100 = 700

Yes, that makes sense. The pairwise numbers (200, 400, 300) each include the 100 who read all three. So when you add them, the 100 gets counted three times. To keep it counted only once, you subtract 2*100. That gives (200 + 400 + 300) - 200 = 700. So the number of members who read at least 2 newspapers is 700.
