Cost is proportional to 4th power of b so if b is doubles the effective change in the cost would be 2^4=16 times

Cost is expressed by the formula \(tb^4\). If b is doubled, by what factor has the cost increased?

(A) 2

(B) 6

(C) 8

(D) 16

(E) \(\frac{1}{2}\)
Solution:

We can let t = 3 and the original value of b = 1. Thus the original value of tb^4 is 3(1)^4 = 3. If the value of b is doubled, then the new value of b is 2 and the new value of tb^4 is 3(2)^4 = 48. We see that the new value of tb^4 is 16 times its original value.

Original cost = \(tb^4 \)

b is doubled: b = 2b

Increased cost = \(t(2b)^4\) = \(16tb^4\) = 16 * original cost
