If x is a negative number, what is the value of x?
(1) x^2 = 1 --> x=-1 or x=1. Since we are given that x is a negative number, then x=-1. Sufficient.
(2) x^2 + 3x + 2 = 0 --> (x + 1)(x + 2) = 0 --> x=-1 or x=-2. Two values. Not sufficient.
Answer: A.

Focusing on phrase " x is a negative number" is important otherwise we may choose incorrect answer.
