Is x a negative number?

(1) 5x + 1 > 6x
(2) x^2 > 1
after combining both statements we get x>+1/-1 and x<1...I couldn't understand how x<0 because combining both I got x to be both +ve and -ve.Please help

Is x a negative number?

(1) 5x + 1 > 6x. Simplifying gives 1 > x. Not sufficient.

(2) x^2 > 1 --> take the square root: |x| > 1 --> x < -1 or x > 1. Not sufficient.

(1)+(2) Intersection of the ranges from (1) and (2) is x < -1, thus x is a negative number. Sufficient.

Answer: C.

Hope it's clear.

Is x a negative number?

(1) 5x + 1 > 6x
(2) x^2 > 1
IMO C FROM STATEMENT 1
5x+1>6x
1>x so x can be 0,0.2 or negative not sufficient
statement 2
x^2>1 then x can be negative or positive but not equal to 0 not sufficient
combining both we can say x will be negative as it is less than 0.

+1 for option C.

St 1 - x<1 -> NS
St 2 - x>1;x<-1 -> NS

Both 1 & 2 - x<-1 -> x is negative

Option C
