The volume of the cylinder is given by \(V=\pi r^2 h=\frac{\pi D^2}{4}h\). We are given the diameter D in the question and need to find V to be able to determine height h. So look for anything that will give us the volume in the two statements.

Statement (1) => Gives us a relationship between the radius and volume. Since we have the diameter (and hence radius) we have enough information to work out the volume. This means we can determine h => Sufficient.

Statement (2) => This gives us the mass of milk in pounds. Without knowing the density (\(density = \frac{mass}{volume}\)) we cannot work out the volume => Insufficient.

Hi,

I have a question for statement 2, is n't 2 pounds sufficient to get volume and hence height?

as 1 pound = 16 ounces, and 1 ounce = 1.8 cubic inches

can you please help?

It says the can holds 2 pounds of milk, but it is not explicit that this is the FULL volume, the total volume of the can could be anything and still have 2 pounds of milk in it. Hence statement 2 is insufficient.
