x, y, and z are consecutive even numbers. What is the average of x, y, and z?

(1) z = 12
(2) x = 8

Average of 3 consecutive even numbers is always the middle number or median value.
So, y is the mean of x,y, and z.

St1:-z=12
y=10 when x<y<z
y=14 when x>y>z

Hence we have two values of average. So, insufficient.

St2:-x = 8
y=10 when x<y<z
y=6 when x>y>z

Hence we have two values of average. So, insufficient.

(1)+(2), y=10,(since x=8<z=12)
Hence,sufficient.

Is the OA: C because we're not told x, y and z are in ascending or descending order? Does GMAT really specify the order for these questions?

YES, I think the OA is C because of the reason mentioned by you. We are able to get a unique answer only after combining both the statements.

X,Y,Z - Consecutive even numbers. Average of X,Y,Z?

I) z = 12: Insufficient as we are not about the order of numbers.

Case 1:

z=12
x=8
y=10

Case 2:

z=12
y=14
z=16

AD/BCE

II) x=8 Insufficient. Same as A

B

I + II: x=8,y=10,z=12. we are able to get an answer by combining the options. Hence C is the answer.
