A company X has offices in four locations – A, B, C and D. The figure above represents a circle graph of X’s profits from each of the four locations in April 2010. One-thirds of companies profits in were registered from B while one-fourths of its profits were registered from A. Were the profits from the location C of the company more than the profits from location D of the company?

IMO should Be D

Let the profit generated be 360°
B has 1/3 proportion so B=360°*1/3=120
A has 1/4 proportion so A=360°*1/4=80

We need to know whether C>D or not. That means 360-120-80=200°
C proportion is bigger among 200
Given C=y and D=X

Statement 1: X>Y
D>C
Answer is definitely No
(Sufficient)

Statement 2: A+D>B+C
80+D>120+C
D>40+C
D is Bigger.
So again answer is definitely No.(sufficient)

Let x be total profit
Statement 1-
A=1/4 x, B=1/3x
So C+D can be calculated
Given X>Y, larger angle, larger area it aweeps in circle
So A is sufficient

Statement B
Given B+C>A+D
Since B>A and B= 1/12 +A,
Put this in given statement, you’ll get
1/3+ C> 1/4 +D

Sufficient

Answer is D

Statement 1 is immediately sufficient, because the angle at the center of the graph is directly proportional to the profits.

Statement 2 tells us that D + 1/4 > C + 1/3, where D and C are the fractions of profits from each division. So D > C + 1/12, and if D is greater than C + 1/12 then D > C must be true, so Statement 2 is also sufficient and the answer is D.

Alternatively for Statement 2, you can notice that A, B, C and D combined account for all of the company profits, so if A and D combined produced more profit than B and C combined, then A and D together account for more than 1/2 the profit, and B and C combined account for less than half. Since A accounts for 1/4 of the profit, D must then account for more than 1/4 of the profit, and since B accounts for 1/3 of the profit, C must account for less than 1/6 of the profit, and D > C must be true.

Solution


Step 1: Analyse Question Stem


    • Given circle graph represents profit of company X from 4 locations A, B, C, and D.
    • Let the total profit of Company X be P.
    • In a circle or pie chart quantity represented by a sector is proportional to the angle subtended by it at the center of the circle.
      o Thus, \(P = 360°\)
    • Also, let us assume that B and A subtend an angle b and a at the center of the circle graph respectively.
    • B registered one third of X’s profit
      o \(⟹ b = \frac{360}{3 }= 120°\)
    • A registered one fourth of the X’s profit.
      o \(⟹ a = \frac{360}{4 }= 90°\)
    • We need to find if profits from location C > Profits from location D.
      o Or, we need to find that if \(y > x\)

Step 2: Analyse Statements Independently (And eliminate options) – AD/BCE


Statement 1: x > y
    • This is directly in line with our pre-analysis.
      o Thus, profits from location C < Profits from location D.
Hence, statement 1 is sufficient and we can eliminate answer Options B, C and E.

Statement 2: The sum of the profits from A and D combined were larger than the sum of the profits from B and C combined.
    • According to this statement: \( 90 + x > 120 +y ⟹ x > 30 + y ⟹ x > y\)
Hence, statement 2 is also sufficient and the correct answer is Option D.
