Question: Is x > y?
Statement 1: (1) x + y < 0
i.e. x < -y
@y = -10, x = 5 i.e. x > y
@y = 10, x = -11 i.e. x < y
NOT SUFFICIENT
Statement 2: x + |y| < −1
i.e. Since lyl is non-negative therefore x is definitely negative because their sum is negative
ALso, Absolute value of x is greater than absolute value of y with an amount greater than 1
hence for both positive and negative value of y
x < y
SUFFICIENT
Answer: Option B

Analyze statement 1 alone
(1) x + y < 0
Inference:
(a) Both x and y are negative=> (-2,-3)
(b) x is negative and y is positive => (-5,2)
(c) x is positive and y is negative => ( 3, -4)
Statement (1) alone not sufficient
Analyze statement 2 alone
(2) x + |y| < −1
Inference:
For the expression to be negative
As |y| is always +ve => x is always negative
Absolute value of x is always greater than absolute value of y.
(a) x is negative and y is +ve=> ( -3,1)
(b) x is negative and y is negative=> (-3,-1)
Thus, X is always less than y.
Statement 2 alone is sufficient
Answer: B
