What is the volume of cone C?

(1) The height of C is 2.

(2) The distance from the apex of C to each point on the circumference of the base of C is 4.

Volume of a cone: 1/3* pi * r^2 * h

We need just enough information to derive Radius and Height of the cone.

Statement 1) The height of C is 2.

We have height but still no clue about the Radius.

Insufficient.

Statement 2) The distance from the apex of C to each point on the circumference of the base of C is 4.

We have the Slant Height L = 4

But we still don't have radius or height.

Insufficient.

Combining both statements

We have H = 2
l = 4

By Pythagorean theorem, we can ascertain the radius

L^2= r^2 + h^2
r^2 = L^2-h^2
r^2 = \sqrt{L^2 - h^2}
r^2= \sqrt{4^2 - 2^2}

We will have a definite answer.

Sufficient. Answer choice C

What is the volume of cone C?

Volume of the cone is given by = 1/3 * pi * r^2 * h
Also slant height in a cone is given by l^2 = r^2 + h^2

Statement 1:
h =2
Clearly alone not sufficient. We need to know about r.

Statement 2:
l= 4
This alone cannot lead us to a single answer. Using Pythagoras theorem we can come up with multiple values of h and r.
Hence not sufficient.

Combining two statements
h= 2 and l = 4
We can get a definite value of r

Volume of the cone = 1/3 * pie*r^2 *h

Stat 1: h= given, but we don't know r. Not sufficient.

Stat 1: l= given, but we don't know r and h. Not sufficient.

Combining both, now, we have r = Sqrt (l^2 - h^2). Sufficient.

So, I think C. :)
